FAQ
Answers to the questions merchants ask most.
#Ritual and products
#Why do all my product cards look the same?
Your products don't have a step yet, so Balm shows them with the plain paper background.
Add a step tag such as step:2 or fill in the Step metafield, see Ritual data.
Check also that Theme settingsProduct cardsShow step color is on.
#Can I use more or fewer than four steps?
No. The four steps (Cleanse, Treat, Moisturize, Protect) are part of how Balm is built: the header, product cards, Ritual view and the cart all use them. Products that don't fit a step, such as tools or gift cards, work normally without one.
#Can I rename the steps?
Yes. In Online Store > Themes, select ... > Edit default theme content next to Balm, search for "Cleanse" (or another step name) and change the text. Do the same for each language your store uses. The step order and the number of steps stay the same.
#A product is used both morning and night. What do I add?
Nothing, for steps 1 to 3: they're morning and night by default. For a step 4 product used
at night too, add both time:am and time:pm.
#Why doesn't my sunscreen show in the evening ritual?
Protect (step 4) is a morning step by default, because sunscreen isn't part of a night routine. Build your ritual has no evening product for step 4, and the cart never suggests a Protect product in PM.
#Should I use tags or metafields?
Tags are the quickest: no setup, and they work with CSV imports. Metafields are better if you want separate Step and Time of day filters on collection pages, or form fields for each detail in the product admin. You can mix both; a metafield wins over a tag. See Ritual data.
#I already have metafields for texture and skin type. Do I need new ones?
No. On the product page, connect your own metafields to the Product facts block with dynamic
sources (how). For product cards, Balm
reads the balm.* metafields, the standard category metafields or tags.
#Pages and sections
#"Complete the ritual" shows the wrong products, or none.
It uses the complementary products you pick in the Search and Discovery app, then your step collections. Check that the complementary products have a step, and that each step collection in Theme settingsRitual has available products. See Complete the ritual.
#Why don't I see filters on my collection pages?
Filters come from the Search and Discovery app. Add them on the app's Filters page, and check that Product gridShow filters is on. See Filters.
#The AM/PM switch doesn't change my collection pages.
It filters collection grids only when a Time of day filter on the balm.time metafield exists.
Without one, it filters Ritual view only. See
The AM/PM switch on collection pages.
#Can I hide the AM/PM switch?
Yes: turn off HeaderShow AM/PM switch. Visitors then stay on the time of day in Theme settingsRitualStarting time of day.
#Why does a section show line drawings instead of my content?
Those are placeholders. They show until you add your own images, products or collections in the section's settings.
#How do I turn off the animations?
Turn off Theme settingsAnimationsEnable animations. Balm also turns them off for any visitor whose device asks for reduced motion.
#The Related products section doesn't show.
Shopify needs some order history before it can recommend related products, so the section hides itself until there are some. You can add related products by hand in the Search and Discovery app. See Related products.
#Does Balm have a slideshow that plays on its own?
No. Balm's slideshow moves only when the visitor asks, which is easier to read and more accessible.
#Store features
#Does Balm support several languages and currencies?
Yes. Balm's storefront text comes in English, French, German, Spanish, Italian and Brazilian Portuguese. Add languages in Settings > Languages and markets in Settings > Markets; the footer then shows language and country/region selectors.
#Where are the customer account pages?
Shopify hosts them. Balm shows the account icon in the header, which opens Shopify's customer accounts. Turn them on in Settings > Customer accounts.
#How do I show color swatches on the product page?
Give the option values swatches in your admin: in the product's Variants card, edit the option (for example "Shade") and add a color or image swatch to each value, or connect the option to a category metafield such as Color, whose values come with swatches. Balm shows options with swatches as swatches, whatever the Variant picker's Style is.
#Can customers send a gift card to someone else?
Yes. Gift card products show a recipient form (name, email, message and send date). Turn it off with Buy buttonsShow recipient form.
#I don't see Shop Pay Installments or pickup availability.
Both depend on your store setup. Shop Pay Installments shows when it's available for your store and the product's price. Pickup availability shows when a location offers local pickup (Settings > Shipping and delivery > Local pickup) and has the variant in stock.
#Can I add apps?
Yes. Apps that add blocks (such as reviews) can go in Product information and Featured product, and apps that give you a code snippet can go in a Custom Liquid section or block. App setup and app problems are handled by the app's developer.
#Updates
#How do I update Balm?
When a new version is out, Online Store > Themes shows an update notice next to Balm. Updating adds a new copy of the theme to your library with your theme editor settings and content kept. Check it, then publish it. The release notes say what changed.
#Will I lose my code changes when I update?
Changes you made in the code editor are not carried over to the updated copy. Note them before you update, then make them again in the new copy, or ask the developer who made them. See Custom code.
#Support
#How do I get help?
Use the support form. We reply within two business days. See Support.
