Filters and recommendations
Collection filters, search filters, "Complete the ritual" and "Related products" all come from Shopify's free Search and Discovery app (listed in the Shopify App Store as Shopify Search & Discovery). Balm shows whatever you set up there. Install the app once from the Shopify App Store.
#Filters
Filters show in a sidebar on collection pages and in a drawer on mobile and search pages. In the theme editor, Product gridShow filters and Show sorting turn them on or off for collections.
#Add a filter
- Open the Search and Discovery app and go to Filters.
- Select Add filter.
- Pick the source, for example Product type, Price, Availability, a product option such as Size, or a product metafield.
- Change the filter label if you like, then select Save.
Filters show on your storefront in the order of the list in the app. Drag them to reorder.
#Recommended filters for a ritual store
| Filter | Source | How Balm shows it |
|---|---|---|
| Step | Product metafield Step (balm.step) |
Step nodes: "01 Cleanse", "02 Treat" and so on |
| Time of day | Product metafield Time of day (balm.time) |
Sun and moon icons |
| Skin type | Product metafield Skin type (balm.skin_type), or the category metafield Suitable for skin type |
A list of values |
| Texture | Product metafield Texture (balm.texture) |
A list of values |
| Price | Price | A price range |
| Availability | Availability | In stock, Out of stock |
Metafield filters need the metafield definitions from Ritual data, with values filled in on your products.
If you use tags instead of metafields, you can add a Tag filter, but Shopify puts every
tag in that one filter (step:1, time:am and skin:Dry side by side), and values in one
filter combine with "or". That's why metafields are recommended for Step and Time of day.
#The AM/PM switch on collection pages
When the Time of day filter (balm.time) exists, the header's AM/PM switch also filters
collection pages: AM shows morning products, PM shows evening products. Without that
filter, the switch filters only Ritual view, in the visitor's browser.
#Ritual view
Ritual view groups a collection's products into step rows, in ritual order: Cleanse, Treat, Moisturize, Protect, then a row for products without a step. Visitors switch between Grid and Ritual view in the collection toolbar.
- Turn the switch on or off in the theme editor: Product gridEnable Ritual view.
- Ritual view is its own collection template, named ritual. Edit it in the theme editor from the page selector at the top: Collections > ritual.
- Links can point straight to it: add
?view=ritualto a collection URL, for example/collections/all?view=ritual. - Filters and sorting work the same in both views.
#Complete the ritual
The Complete the ritual section on product pages shows the four steps, with one product for each step, the current product marked "You are here", the dose for each step and, with Show total on, the total price and a button that adds the rest of the ritual to the bag.
Balm fills each of the other steps like this:
- Complementary products you picked for this product in the Search and Discovery app. Balm takes the first one with that step and the current time of day.
- If none fits, the first available product, for the current time of day, from that step's collection in Theme settingsRitual.
- If there's still none, the step shows its name, linked to the step collection.
#Pick complementary products
- Open the Search and Discovery app and go to Recommendations.
- Search for a product and open it.
- In Complementary products, select Add products and pick the products that complete its ritual, ideally one or more for each other step.
- Select Save.
Complementary products need ritual data to land on the right step. A complementary product without a step isn't used by Complete the ritual.
The Where it fits block in the product information section shows the same four-step rail in the buy box. With Show ritual link on, it links down to Complete the ritual.
#Related products
The Related products section shows products Shopify finds related to the one being viewed. Shopify's related recommendations improve as your store gets orders. You can also add related products by hand on the same Recommendations page in the Search and Discovery app, under Related products.
If Shopify has no related products yet, for example in a new store, the section hides itself on the storefront.
These pages describe Balm 1.0.0 and are updated with every release. See the release notes for what changed.
